Schools will gather at the Restigouche River Experience parking lot to start the walk. We will walk to the Campbellton Civic Centre using the walking path along Salmon Blvd.

Time: Starting at 9:30 a.m. (New-Brunswick)

            Starting at 8:30 a.m. (Quebec)

This event provides a valuable opportunity for young people to learn about the history and realities of their neighboring Mi’gmaq communities, as well as reconciliation efforts underway in Canada. The Listuguj Education Directorate is grateful to all schools for joining us as we honour our Residential School Survivors.

This event is a part of the AGS - Treaty Education Program made possible with the help of the Schools directions and our Mi'gmaq

More details about the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation:

Canada’s relationship with Indigenous peoples has suffered as a result of both the Residential School system and the lack of understanding of the historical and current impact of those schools. Healing and repairing that relationship requires education, awareness and increased understanding of the legacy and the impacts still being felt by Survivors and their families.  Young people are vital to how we move forward.  We need each of you.”  – Speaking our Truth – a Journey of Reconciliation, Monique Gray Smith

National Center for Truth and Reconciliation:

“For a period of more than 150 years, First Nations, Inuit and Métis Nation children were taken from their families and communities to attend schools which were often located far from their homes. More than 150,000 children attended Indian Residential Schools. Many never returned.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) concluded that residential schools were “a systematic, government- sponsored attempt to destroy Indigenous cultures and languages and to assimilate Indigenous peoples so that they no longer existed as distinct peoples.” The TRC characterized this intent as “cultural genocide.”
