Tomorrow, September 30, is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. The Alaqsite’w Gitpu School will take part in several activities today in honour of Indian Residential School survivors and all those who never made it home.
Before today, each student was given a rock to paint and decorate in orange. Throughout the day, classroom bubbles will bring their rocks to the ceremony room and place them near a monument dedicated to the children who didn’t make it home to their families. A fire will also be lit in the back of the school for students who wish to offer tobacco.
For students to learn more about the importance of Orange Shirt Day and the impacts of residential schools, a series of videos will be played in the cafeteria and the school librarian will be available to read storybooks to their class.
We encourage everyone to join our students and wear orange tomorrow, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
